Access to the data

RedTitan helps you to exploit your database effectively and efficiently, even with multiple hosts, and with no restrictions on output format. RT5000 doesn't just process a data file — it can interact dynamically with different types of database.

Any host environment supported
RT5000 processes data from any type of host computer — IBM, Unix, Tandem, or whatever — so you are not tied to host-specific document systems and there are no complications if you use more than one host. All commonly used types of data file are supported; these can be imported at the design phase to show the finished document on screen.

Dynamic access to the database
RT5000 actually lets you interact dynamically with most types of database by actioning a query in SQL (Structured Query Language). This means it can access databases such as Paradox, dBase and text files, as well as ODBC compliant systems, such as Access, Interbase, Informix, and Sybase, and act as a client of remote networked database servers, such as Oracle. By extracting data directly from the database, you can be sure that documents reflect the most current information, avoiding the embarrassment of out of date records.

Powerful conditional logic processing
RT5000 lets you use powerful `conditional logic' when setting up your documents. This lets you do much more than simply drop variable text into fixed points in a template. You can use the database to create the content itself, merging it invisibly into the layout, to create seamless, completely personalised documents.

Visual design

The document may be your only contact with your customers and so the way it looks is paramount. The desktop publishing revolution has opened up new design possibilities and companies now expect the same quality from their high-volume database systems. RT5000's powerful features let you meet today's standards for increasingly sophisticated layouts and typefaces — and still allow output at full production speeds.

WYSIWYG graphical design interface
With an easy-to-use document design interface, a comprehensive set of text and drawing tools are used to build up the page design. The markers for the variable parts of the documents are seen on screen and can be embedded in paragraphs and manipulated in the same way as other text and objects. But you don't just see the fixed parts of the document — the whole job can be previewed on screen, dynamically reformatted. The designer can scroll through the finished job and check the layout on any of the pages. The system looks after all the dynamic formatting — staff never waste time changing and checking alignments on every document.

Quick and easy proofing
Perfect proofs and short runs can be printed quickly on a locally attached desktop printer — the same data produces the same output on any printer — so the layout can be checked without doing a test run on the production printer.

Automatic resource handling and reformatting
When you merge in the variable text, RT5000 takes care of the resources, using the correct format for your output, and it handles all the formatting details at high speed: proportional fonts, adjustments of line ends and page breaks, font changes, line spacing, colour highlights. Logos, signatures and other graphics are positioned correctly and reflowed within the text. Barcodes can be created on documents from information in the database.

Flexible delivery

Because RT5000 is vendor-independent, it fits into your current system architecture, maximising its performance and giving you the flexibility to upgrade your system when and how you want.

Output to any format
With RT5000 one core document produces output in any format you require. Pages are dynamically reformatted at full production speeds in PostScript, Xerox Metacode, or PCL format. Output is available for most other industry standard printer formats, including VIPP (Variable Data Intelligent PostScript PrintWare) for Xerox DocuPrint/DocuTech, IBM-AFP, Siemens, Oce and many others. This gives you the freedom to output to any local, centralised or networked printers, on-site or anywhere in the world, and to upgrade to any new systems you choose without rewriting core business applications.

Electronic output and archiving facilities
With RT5000 you do not need to second-guess how documentation will be handled in the future. The same document can be output to TIFF graphic format for fax servers and COLD archiving systems and to HTML so that you can share it on local intranet or Internet servers.

Flexible connectivity
RT5000 fits perfectly into any system. It acts as a server on any local area network, including Novell Netware and TCP/IP LPR/LPD, so you are not tied to one type of network protocol. RT5000's Window drivers means that your mainframe centralised printer can be integrated into the network so that staff can print direct to it from the desktop PC. Documents can be shared on local or wide area networks. This means that the whole company can communicate effectively, using the same core information.

Legacy application migration
A special module in RT5000 allows jobs from old Xerox centralised printers to be output unchanged in new formats. You can migrate to new systems, such as sophisticated PostScript environments or the faster PCL printers, without needing to rewrite legacy applications.
